Talk of bodybuilding and what comes in the minds of many are strong men half nude exposing their already exposed muscles. Rarely do people think about women. This contravenes the fact the women have been in this industry for nearly two decades now. In fact there welcoming ceremony was a very grand one. Let me take you through the earlier development in body building among women.
It started on the 9th day of April 1989 in Tiny Island in Asia, early known as Formosa. Women bodybuilding was not a popular in those days, but contention was about it. One of the first women who had started a very progressive training in bodybuilding was Joan Bovino. She started her training in bodybuilding years before the event. Many people heard about her. She had dreamed about the bigger muscles than anybody could image. And at those days everybody was eager to meet with Joan Bovino. Later some news started spread such information that there were other women who resembled to Joan Bovino. And those women could easily challenge her in the contest. After that people more eager to meet those unique kinds of women.
America was famous for its craziness towards parades. Promoters started struggling to organize the event. Just like today, everybody loved parade those days. Everybody tried to outdo the other. The idea of women body builders added to the list of famous parades. Ironically, it started way after the other parades but none could match its popularity.
The number of people who attended the event was over 200,000. The government of Tainan, expected this turnout and therefore prepared a very large space for the event. But nevertheless people flocked the streets, shops and some even went as far as climbing the roof tops to catch a glimpse of the great event.
During the competition, the lightweight turned to be the most competitive event of the day. It was so competitive especially when the number had already been reduced to 14 contestants. By the end of the day, the winner had to carry the day. Everybody went praising the occasion and it did not leave the lips of people for months. It gave Mr. Yeh, a president of Tainan, a greater political fame as one who hosted such an event.
Those were the old days, lets now come back home, today. Even though the women body builders entered the industry in such a grand style, the truth is, muscle building is still dominated by men. Could it be that we lack dedicated women like Bovino and her friends? May be we no longer have leaders like Mr. Yeh to host this great event. Promoters, I know are there and just waiting for an opportunity with baited breath. At the same time, that grand entry was to jump start the whole process. It should not be expected every now and then. Women body builders should now just take the path taken by their male counterparts. They can do it even better if they decide to.
