The Role of Glycerol in Bodybuilding

Glycerol is a colorless, odorless syrupy liquid with a sweet taste which is 60% as sweet as sucrose. Each gram of glycerol contains 4.32 calories.  Technically it is a sugar alcohol.

What is glycerol?
In fact it is a carbohydrate based on simple sugars (glucose and sucrose). Their formula is CH2O. Glycerol consists of polymeric compounds. They are made up of the simple sugars and can be hydrolyzed to yield simple sugars.

When the carbohydrate breaks down it gives you energy and it assists in the production of lipids. When the fatty acids are combined with glycerol they form triglyceride. All carbohydrate includes a lot of cellulose, starches, and of course sugars.

Carbohydrates are the organic compounds. They consist of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. They can include simple sugars which have 3-7 atoms of carbon and also they may contain very complex polymers. Only the hexoses (sugars with six carbon atoms) and pentoses (sugars with five carbon atoms) and their polymers are very beneficial for you and should be included in your nutrition.

Carbohydrates are produced and stored by the plants as the main source of energy. The leaves of the plants have a synthesized glucose which serves as the basis for more complex carbohydrates.

A high protein bar contains about 18-25 grams of glycerol. The consumption of the excessive amount may cause an upset stomach or diarrhea. The proper dosage should be one gram per kilo of the body weight.

You shouldn’t take more than 100 grams a day. Glycerol is chemically an alcohol. It is produced from oils and fats and its function is to preserve moisture from the air.

If you take glycerol orally it may have a hydrating/dehydrating effect. The main feature of glycerol is to preserve water. This ability is necessary for keeping the bar soft and it is also very useful for athletes and bodybuilders.

Endurance athletes should drink extra water before taking glycerol. It is necessary for maintaining proper hydration and improving the performance. The dosage is different for each individual. You can start with consuming 1-gram glycerol per kilogram body weight and drink an additional 1.5L - 2.0L of water 1-4 hours before the competition.

Bodybuilders can take lower dosages of glycerol before the performance and don’t drink additional water.

Glycerol is helpful in increasing the blood volume, the temperature regulation and improves your workout performance in the heat. Due to the fact that it is a sweet liquid, glycerol acts like a sponge in your body. If you take it with water or sport drink it creates greater fluid retention. Hyper hydration is very beneficial before the competition because it can help you eliminate the negative effects of dehydration.
