Water is very important for the health and life. It is also useful for your training. It is the most crusial element for your life after the oxygen. It is known that the body can live for weeks without food but without water it can survive only several days especially in warm temperatures and high altitudes. Human body and the most organs on 60-75% consist of water.
Water is helpful in performing all functions of the body. It assists in the process of digestion, nutrient absorption. It regulates the body temperature and blood circulation. It provides the transport of nutrients and oxygen to your cells and eliminates waste products from the body. Water also decreases wear on joints serving as lubrication and cushioning including the spinal cord. Dehydration can lead to various problems. Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj at his book Your Body's Many Cries for Water states that dehydration can cause hypertension, asthma, allergies and migraines.
Why is water so necessary for bodybuilders? The main function of water is to regulate the temperature. During your workout you produce heat and your body performs various mechanisms in order to lose heat. The environment that surrounds you plays a great role but the most effective method of cooling is sweating. The fluid vaporization is very beneficial. During a long workout you can lose nearly 2 litres of sweat for an hour.
Fluid loss equals to the decreasing of body weight on 2% which can influence on the efficiency of your muscular exercises. The athletes who live in the countries with moderate climate lose 1-5% of their weight due to the long training even if they drink a lot of water. In the extreme situations they can lose 8-10%. In the cases of serious dehydration and electrolyte loss the volume of the blood plasma can decrease which can lead to the wrong circulation.
Water assists in the transportation of oxygen, nutrients, hormones and antibodies through the blood stream and lymphatic system. They are helpful in reducing risk of cancer, fighting various viruses, bacteria and infections. When you perform hard workout in gym your body excretes a lot of water. In case of dehydration the immune system can easily suffer from invasion of various organisms from outside. That’s why it is very crusial to hydrate your body properly.
Your muscle on 75% consists of water. So it is very important to drink a lot of water in order to avoid muscular dehydration. When the dehydration of muscles occurs it may lead to the loss of strength and the appearance of cramps. By cramps you should understand muscle spasms or the abnormal muscle contraction locked in an awkward position. It occurs mostly when the muscles are overtrained, injured or unprotected to the extreme temperatures. Water assists in the regulation of the body temperature, transporting of the nutrients to your cells and decreases the risk of cramps.
Water serves as a lubricant for your joints and the cartilage between the vertebrae and at the end of long bones at synovial joints. The proper hydration of cartilage helps prevent abrasive damage. If you don’t hydrate your joints correctly for a long time it will lead to joint deterioration and sore.
